Ion-selective potentiometric sensors with silicone sensing membranes: A review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) are used widely in mainframe analyzers for clinical chemistry, but there is also an increasing interest the development of paper-based devices, wearable and implantable sensors, other miniaturized ISEs. This trend spurring much research developing solid contact materials that enable miniaturization. The suitable polymeric matrixes such sensors has only received less attention. In particular, spite lifetime limitations toxicity concerns, comprising plasticizers still commonly used. To end, we note benefits silicone as alternative and, their promise enhanced biocompatibility. While been steady progress ISEs with membranes, this topic not reviewed many years. review critically discusses key fundamental characteristics sensing reference including biocompatibility, adhesion to device substrates, water uptake, polarity, common impurities, commercial availabilities. followed by a discussion specific types silicones use ISEs, goal inform stimulate future efforts into devices.

Potentiometric sensors with ion-exchange Donnan exclusion membranes.

Potentiometric sensors that exhibit a non-Hofmeister selectivity sequence are normally designed by selective chemical recognition elements in the membrane. In other situations, when used as detectors in separation science, for example, membranes that respond equally to most ions are preferred. With so-called liquid membranes, a low selectivity is difficult to accomplish since these membranes ar...

Polymer membrane-based ion-, gas- and bio-selective potentiometric sensors.

Recent progress in the design of new polymer membrane-based potentiometric ion-, gas- and bio-selective electrodes in chemistry laboratories at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) is reviewed. Emphasis is placed on describing the performance of devices for measuring anions (e.g., salicylate, thiocyanate, chloride and heparin) and gases (e.g., ammonia, carbon dioxide and oxygen) in biological...

Paper-based potentiometric ion sensing.

This paper describes the design and fabrication of ion-sensing electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (EPADs) in which a miniaturized paper reference electrode is integrated with a small ion-selective paper electrode (ISPE) for potentiometric measurements. Ion-sensing EPADs use printed wax barriers to define electrochemical sample and reference zones. Single-layer EPADs for sensing of c...

Ion-Selective Electrodes With Ionophore-Doped Sensing Membranes

At the time of this writing, more than 20 000 publications related to ion-selective electrodes (ISEs)1–7 have been published, with approximately two new ones per day in recent years. Figure 1 shows, for the period between 1970 and 2009, the continuing increase in the number of publications that could be readily recognized as reporting on the preparation or use of ionophore-based ISEs. Clearly, ...
